Description

Fork Seals (Standard) | Honda CB360 / CL360 / CJ360

A weeping fork seal puts oil on your front tire and takes the damping out of your front end. These are the standard-style replacements for the 33 mm forks on the CB360 family, sold in pairs because you do both legs at once.

Why You Need This

These are OEM quality, the same as Honda used at the factory. A standard seal is a rubber inner in a hard metal outer casing, and it has to be driven into the fork body.

That extra step buys you something. On a fork with a worn lower and a bit of play in it, a standard seal holds up better than the push-in type, which can weep once the lower is worn. If your fork has real wobble in it, this is the seal to use.

Measure before you order. Honda used more than one fork design across the CB350 and CB360 years, and they take different seals. Measure the outer diameter of your fork tube and the inner diameter of the lower before you buy — an early-style seal will not fit a late fork.

Installation

Difficulty: Intermediate

Tools needed: a tube, pipe or large socket to drive the seal, and a graduated cylinder for the fork oil

  1. With the fork apart, check the chrome on the fork tube where it runs through the seal. Pitting or scoring there will chew a new seal straight back out, and no seal will fix a damaged tube.
  2. Lubricate the new seal inside and out.
  3. Drive it in with a socket or pipe slightly smaller than the seal’s outer diameter. Too small and you damage the sealing face; too large and you hit the fork housing.
  4. Stop when the snap ring groove sits right above the seal all the way round. Do not drive it past the groove.
  5. Refit the snap ring.
  6. Refill with fork oil and check for leaks once the fork is back together.

Always fit new seals. A seal that has been pulled out does not go back in.

Fork Oil

How much goes back in depends on what you did to the fork, and it is not the same across the family. Replacing seals means the fork came apart, so use the disassembly figure, not the oil-change one.

Model After the fork has been apart Straight oil change
CB360 / CL360 160–165 cc per leg 135–140 cc per leg
CJ360 140–150 cc per leg 120 cc per leg

Measure it with a graduated cylinder rather than eyeballing it — the amounts are close enough together that guessing puts you in the wrong column.

ATF, the original fill, runs about 5 weight. We prefer a motorcycle-specific fork oil: 10 weight for riders under 200 lbs, 15 weight for riders over. It firms the front end up without going harsh.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many do I need for one bike?

One set. These come in pairs, so a single purchase does both fork legs.

I ordered seals and they were too small. What do I need?

You most likely have the early-style seal. The CB360 family uses a different fork with a 33 mm tube, and these are the seals for it. Measure your fork tube’s outer diameter to confirm before reordering.

What is the difference between these and the EZ install seals?

These have to be driven into the fork body with a socket or pipe; the EZ type takes less finesse to fit. The trade is that a standard seal copes better with a worn lower fork, where a push-in seal can start weeping.

I fitted a new seal and it is still leaking. Now what?

Look at the fork tube itself. If the chrome is pitted or scored where it passes through the seal, it will keep cutting seals no matter how many you fit. Check the tube before buying another set.

Does this fit a CB450?

It fits the CB450 K0 Black Bomber. Later CB450s take a different seal — see our Fork Seals (Standard) | CB450 / CB500 / CB550.
