Description

Hondalock Thread Locker | Genuine Honda

Fasteners on a fifty-year-old Honda work loose from vibration and wear. Hondalock is Honda’s own thread locker, and it keeps the ones you don’t want to revisit exactly where you put them.

Why You Need This

Vibration and wear back fasteners out. For anything you need to be able to take apart again, the fix is a periodic retighten with a torque wrench. Thread locker is for the other kinda screw, nut or bolt that lives somewhere it will keep shaking loose, and that you don’t plan on removing again.

This is genuine Honda “Hondalock” brand, and it protects against vibration, loosening and corrosion on all types of fasteners. It comes in four grades so you can match the hold to the fastener’s torque class.

Choosing Your Grade

The first three share the same working range; only the 2 HT goes higher. All four set and cure on the same schedule.

Grade Strength Use On Usable Temp Range Set / Cure
Hondalock 1 (9201) Low Strength Low torque fasteners -40 F through +300 F 5 minutes to set, 24 hrs to cure
Hondalock 2 (9202) Medium Strength Medium torque fasteners -40 F through +300 F 5 minutes to set, 24 hrs to cure
Hondalock 3 (9203) High Strength Semi-permanent installs and high torque fasteners -40 F through +300 F 5 minutes to set, 24 hrs to cure
Hondalock 2 HT (9204) Medium Strength, with a higher temperature rating Medium torque fasteners, especially ideal for exhaust components -40 F through +400 F 5 minutes to set, 24 hrs to cure

Note: Hondalock 3 is a semi-permanent hold. Use it where you mean it.

How to Apply

Difficulty: Beginner

  1. Mock the whole assembly up loose and get it sitting where it will live. Thread locker sets fast, so anything you still need to shift has to be shifted first.
  2. Once you are committed to the final position, back out one fastener at a time.
  3. Put a drop on the threads and run the fastener back in.
  4. Move to the next one, and torque everything down once they are all wet.
  5. Leave it 24 hours before you ride.

The order matters more than the technique. Applying thread locker before the parts are aligned is how you end up fighting a set fastener while the rest of the assembly is still moving around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grade should I use?

Match the grade to the fastener’s torque class. Hondalock 1 is for low torque fasteners, Hondalock 2 for medium. Hondalock 3 is for high torque fasteners and semi-permanent installs. If the joint runs hot, the 2 HT carries the same medium strength up to +400 F.

When should I use thread locker instead of anti-seize?

They do opposite jobs. Thread locker keeps a fastener from backing out under intense vibration when you don’t expect to remove it again. Anti-seize does the reverseit stops threads galling and seizing so a fastener comes back out years later.

Do I need it on my muffler bolts?

On a CB350 muffler install, the bracket bolts are the spot for it, and it is optional rather than required. The important part is timing: get the exhaust fully mocked up and aligned first, then pull the bracket bolts one at a time to apply it. Committing early is the mistake worth avoiding.

Where else does thread locker go on these bikes?

On the CB450 fork damper. The threaded part of the damper gets thread lock cement, and the 8 mm lock nut needs to be completely screwed on before you tighten the fork bolt.

How long before I can ride?

It sets in about 5 minutes, which is enough to keep working, but give it the full 24 hours to cure before the bike sees load and heat.
