Description

Ignition Condenser | Honda CB175 / CB200

A worn ignition condenser is one of the most common reasons a CB175 or CB200 won’t rev cleanly. The condenser has no moving parts, but it still degrades with age — and when it does, your points burn and the engine sputters as the revs climb. This is the direct replacement for the CB175 and CB200 family.

Why You Need This

The condenser works with the points to fire the coil. It keeps the points from burning up, and it keeps the coil charged hard enough to make a strong spark as the revs climb. When the condenser weakens you get burnt, pitted points and a top end that sputters, misses, or falls flat as you accelerate past about 5,000 rpm.

The CB175, CL175, SL175, CB200, and CL200 all run a single ignition coil and a single set of points — the 360-degree crank fires both plugs together every revolution. (That’s different from the 350/360 twins, which use two separate sets of points.) This condenser is the right one for that single-points system.

Note: The condenser grounds through its mounting tab — clean the surface where it bolts on so it has a solid ground, or it won’t do its job.

Installation & Diagnosis

Difficulty: Intermediate

Replace the condenser whenever you replace your points — they’re a matched wear pair, and fresh points behind a tired condenser won’t last.

To check a suspect condenser, pull the points cover and watch the contacts in a dark spot. A bright spark or arc jumping across the points every time they open points to a bad condenser; a small spark every few seconds is normal. If a previous owner rewired the bike, double-check that the coil wiring is routed correctly while you’re in there.
