Description

Latch for Honda Flip Top Gas Cap

Broken gas cap latch? Can’t keep your fuel cap closed while riding? This replacement latch fits the flip-top style gas cap used on most vintage Honda twins and inline fours from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s.

Why You Need This

The flip-top gas cap latch takes a beating — decades of opening and closing eventually wears out the spring, bends the catch, or snaps the hinge entirely. A broken latch means your gas cap flops open while riding, spilling fuel onto your tank and down your leg. Not a great look, and a fire hazard to boot.

Our replacement latch installs with a hinge shaft and circlip — much easier to service in the future than the original factory rivet. One latch per gas cap.

Does NOT fit: Honda CB175, CL175, SL175, CB350 K0–K2, CL350 K0–K2, CB450 K0–K2, or CL450 K0–K2 — those earlier models use a twist-on style gas cap with no latch. Also does not fit the CT90 or any model with a hinged (non-flip-top) cap.

Installation

Difficulty: Beginner

  1. Remove the old latch — Use a very small punch to tap out the retaining pin from the hinge. The original factory latch uses a long rivet — you’ll need to drive it all the way through.
  2. Install the new latch — Align the new latch with the hinge holes on the gas cap. Insert the hinge shaft and secure with the included circlip.
  3. Lubricate — Apply a small amount of light oil or grease to the hinge and latch mechanism. This prevents the latch from jamming over time.

Stuck pin tip: If the original rivet won’t budge, try penetrating oil and let it soak before tapping. Don’t use a nail as a punch — use a proper pin punch to avoid bending or breaking your tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this fit a CB350 K0 or K1?

No. The CB350 K0, K1, and K2 (and CL350 K0–K2) use a twist-on style gas cap — there’s no latch on those models. The flip-top cap with latch started on the CB350 K3 (1971).

What’s the difference between this latch and the locking latch?

This is a standard thumb-release latch. We also sell a locking version that uses a key — handy if you park your bike in public and want to prevent fuel theft or tampering.

I can’t get the original pin out — any tips?

The factory rivet can be stubborn after 50 years. Use penetrating oil, let it soak, and drive it out with a proper pin punch — not a nail. If it still won’t move, a small drill bit can help loosen the rivet before punching.

Will this fit a CB750?

Yes — it fits the CB750 K0 through K6 (1969–1976). All of those models use the same flip-top gas cap design.
