While both sizes function identically, the primary difference lies in their diameter, weight capacity, and intended application.

1/2″ Quick-Release Axle (Standard / Active Everyday)

The 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) diameter axle is the standard size found on the vast majority of active-use manual wheelchairs and standard sports wheels.

Best For: Everyday mobility, active commuting, and standard sports configurations where keeping the overall chair weight low is a priority.

The 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) diameter axle is a thicker, reinforced axle designed specifically to withstand severe lateral impacts and heavy loads.

Best For: High-impact contact sports like wheelchair basketball and quad rugby, as well as bariatric wheelchair configurations.
